The “little folk singer” of The Voice Kids Vietnam
Đoàn Minh Tài comes from Tiền Giang in southern Vietnam. In 2014, at 14, Minh Tài joined season 2 of The Voice Kids Vietnam (Giọng hát Việt nhí) on coach Cẩm Ly’s team. Performances of “Còn thương rau đắng mọc sau hè”, “Bạc Liêu hoài cổ”, “Nội tôi” and “Ngày đá đơm bông” earned the affectionate nickname “the little folk singer”.
The journey on the show ended at the fourth live show (13 September 2014), but the love for folk music carried on.
Đàn tranh, đàn bầu and the folk path
Beyond singing, Minh Tài plays the đàn tranh (zither) and the đàn bầu (monochord). Introduced to the Ho Chi Minh City Conservatory by songwriter Minh Vy and singer Cẩm Ly, in 2019 Minh Tài was a third-year student in two programmes, đàn tranh (bachelor’s) and đàn bầu (intermediate), while recording, mixing, filming and editing music videos independently. That same year, a fourth solo mini show, “Ru lại câu hò”, took place in Ho Chi Minh City. In 2022, Minh Tài graduated with a bachelor’s degree in đàn tranh.
